N August 31, 1923, Miss Christine M. Nuno, c/o American Women's Hospitals, Athena, Greece. s My dear Miss Nuno: I am back once more in my office at wational Head- quarters, and your old friend Mr. Mulhall has just been in for a little discussion, which naturally ends in a good-nstureaddiscussion of his adherence to technicalities and the letter of the law. However, he is a very good man and I like him, Upon my return I found several letters from you, including the personal one which was written in reply to my confidential letter to you, written now sone months ago. I shall not speak of it again, and I shall regard the incident as closed, and I hope you will. However, I de feel a bit concerned about the general situation in Greece, and the /aplit betwoen the A.W.H., and the N.T.R., but I am too far away to take an active part in the discussion. One must be close to a situation of this sort in order to give advice af an opinion which would be of the slightest value. I am a bit surprised, however, that the American nurses with the A.W.H., have frit it necessary to rosign. It seems to me rather unfortunate, and I fear that there will be more or less criticism of because of this. After all, sick patients must be mursed, and wosther they are in a Hospital of the A.W.H., or the N.E.R., does not alter the othical responsibility of the nurse in this direction, and it dees not seem to me that they should leave these hospitals until they are properly covered by othor nurses, and I am sure subatitutes that you course, they after how they will see that remain sufficiently long to secure satisfactory or I have no control over the nurses are once assigned to another organization. I have written you, ver, quite frankly regarding our Agreement with the Near East Rolief, so that I will not speak of this again, but I feel very strongly that the N.F.R. should either cancel this Agreement, or live up to the spirit as well as the letter of this understanding, There is cone statement in your letter of the 3lst of July, in which you state *I do not anticipate any pleasure in trying to W get the uniforms and capos out of the storehouse. It was my understand- ing that Mrs. Heilman had supplied all the nurses of both the N.E.R. w and the L.W.H., with uniforma, in fact one of her letters some months ago stated - that ahe had asked for a list of all the personnel." If they have been, why should they need more? Naturally, these uniforms I should not be used for civilians, unless they have been changed in theer type and character sufficiently to be able to distinguish the lay worker J or the aid from a membor of the nursing profession. I imagine very 2 0 to 2
