KOEFOED FAMILY RECORD COMPILED BY RUTH KOEFOED TRANSLATED BY AGNES LEIN Families up to and including Major Holger Koefoed; born 1663 on the Island of Bornholm, died in Skogn, Norway, in 1752. This record is taken from Julius Bidstrup's "History of Koefoed family A," " Copenhagen, 1886. Giessing relates in his history of the Koefoed family published in 1786 that Danish noblemen bearing the name Koefoed and wearing the Koefoed coat of arms were among Norsemen who invaded Normandy. He also rolates that when William the Conqueror went from Normandy to England in 1063, there was in the group of Norman noblemen who were his followers one whose name was Arnfred Koefoed; but it would probably be diffi- cult to prove relationship between him and the Koefoed family from Bornholm. ### 1. Mads Jensen Koefoed, born at Hasle, Bornholm. Merchant and owner of "Lille Haslegaard, Married to Elizabeth Olufsdatter. Four children; three died in infancy. Their son: 2. Jens Madsen Koefoed, born 1481, died 1519. In 1496 he entered the service of Archbishop Byrge, Lund, who raised him to the rank of a nobleman in recognition of his faithful service, manliness, wisdom, and good deeds. The letter of enablement is dated 14/6, 1514. Married to Johanne Thyges- datter. Five children. Their son: 3. Mads Jensen Koefoed, Mayor of Ronne. Two children. Their son: 4. Hans Koefoed, 'Blykobbegaard, " Mykersogn, Bornholm, described himself as a free citizen (free man) 1608. Seven children; the oldest, 5. Peder Hansen Koefoed, born 15/6, 1598, died 24/12, 1648. Captain, council- man, and later Mayor of Ronne. He had a part in turning Bornholm over to the Swedish General Wrangel in 1645, and for this deed he was banished. After his death his widow and children were pardoned for his act of treason. Peder Koefoed owned many farms on Bornholm. He had 15 children, of whom 7 are known. One son, Jens Pedersen Koefoed, "Hero Tales of the Far North." Jacob A. Riis, - MacMillan Co. - 1938 (publisher) "The trooper who won a war. An interesting account of how he outwitted the Swedish Commander and recaptured the Island of Bornholm for Denmark. The King (Frederick III) presented Koefoed with a silver cup and made him Captain of the Island. Jens Pedersen Koefoed was a leader in the revolution against the Swedes on Bornholm in 1658. He is still called "Bornholm's Liberator. During the revolution the Swedish Commander, Johan Prinsenskjold, was shot by Jens Pedersen Koefoed's brother-in-law, Vilhelm Klausen, "Kelan."
