    "ocrText": "e\nand\n+\n+\nZ\nFale\nan\nReport on Visit with Mrs. Burnside, Miss Naney Pett's mother, at\n4031 Wesson Avenue, Detroit, Michigan.\nSeptember 19, 1941.\nThe Burnsides live in a small apartment, simply furnished and beautifully\ncared for.\nMrs. Burnside is a wholesome, motherly and charming woman. She and Mr.\nBurnside both show the effect of the groat strain they have been under and still\nare under because of the uncertainty of not knowing whether Nancy is dead or\nalive - if alive, under what conditions and where.\nFrom correspondence with the nurees who have returned from Scotland,\nnewspaper and radio accounts they have practically all the details concerning\nthe torpedoing, etc. In addition, they and friends are constantly searching\nfor news items that might lead then to someone who would have news of the lost\nnurses.\nThe family, although in moderate circumstances, were not depending on\nfinancial assistance from Nancy. They do not know whether ahe had the money\nthey had given her changed to traveler's chacks before she left Jackson,\nMichigan. The son will clear this with the bank. Mrs. Burnside is of the\nopinion that the Red Cross check was cashed and made into traveler's checka\nNew Orleans. Could this be traced through one of the nurses now in Englandy Furney)\nterritorial\nor thrum of 4 who have returned. I would piggard that the\nMrs. Burnside would appreciate knowing the War Department's opinion\nbeture writer\nregarding the neutrel position of the ship when it was torpedoed. This is a\nquestion raised by the insurance company of the Detroit Auto Club.\nby w R. V,S\nIn addition, she wonders if we could tell her whether whoever was in\ncharge of the girls in New Orleans gave Naney permission to wear the little\n?\ncross which her mother had given her with her name engraved on it on the chain\nwith the Red Cross identification tag.\nBecause of their desire to learn all they can. about the experiences of\nthe nurses in the torpedoed shipe, r'd like to suggest that we send Mrs.\nBurnside copies of Miss MéGill's articles.\nMrs. Burnside, although suffering from the strain, is spending three full\ndays in the Red Cross sewing rooms and, in addition, is doing a great deal of\nknitting.
