Extract from letter to Miss Virginia Dunbar from Miss Gertrude
Madley, Chief Nurse, American Red Cross-Harvard Field Hospital
Unit, England, April 8, 1942:

"In addition there will be two transfers to other departments.
Bernice Wilbur will go to the dietary department and Shirley
Ralph to the laboratory. Dr. Smott has asked for Miss Ralph
T
as an untrained technician. She worked in the laboratory until
we became busy in the hospital. She did very good work there and
I feel that if she can gain experience which will be of value to
her in the future she should be given the opportunity. She will,
of course, be entered on the Harvard payroll when the transfer is
made at the completion of her year of service. Until that time
she will remain on duty in the hospital.
