R all F n You will soon receive a letter from the Honorable Norman H. Davis, Chairman of the American National Red Cross, and with it a token of the esteem in which the heroic action of every member of the Unit S is held. 5 You will be glad to know that a memorial fund to be used as a loan fund by the nurses of the American Red Cross-Harvard Unit has been T raised by friends of Ruth Woodman Breckinridge in her memory. To this fund many individuals have contributed. Not only have individuals contributed, but the alumne associations of the schools of nursing from which the Harvard Unit nurses graduated. A committee has been formed to see that this fund is used by the nurses of the Unit in any way which will promote their best professional or personal interests, and give each person to whom a loan is made her best opportunity for prefessional growth. To borrow from the fund will be counted as an honor paid to the entire Unit. If there is no longer an occasion for the members of the Unit to use this fund, it is understood that the money will revert to a more general American Red Cross nurse loan fund. On September 16 of last year, Sir Wilson Jameson, Chief Medical Officer, Ministry of Health, sent a letter which came to the Dean of the Hervard Medical School and to the Chairmon of the American Red Cross expressing his deep appreciation of the service which the Unit has rendered to the people of Great Britain. I enclose a copy of this letter. There is little more that I can add at this time except to say thit the spirit which prompted the nurses of the Harvard Unit, a spirit which has informed their work throughout the year's service in England in war-time, has been and will always be a source of inspiration and strength to me personally. Tie of the Red Cross are deeply and sincerely, grateful that we have been privileged to have had any share in it. Sincerely yours, Mary Beard Director, Nursing Service ES:ce 8 N W
