Miss Lydia F. Reich
1090 Alicia Avenue
West Englewood, New Jersey
My dear Miss Reich:
Thank you very much for the application which you sub-
mitted and for your letter of March 8. I am sorry that I did not
see you when you were here. I asked Miss Snyder about you when I
was at UNRRA and she said that you were on your way back to New
Jersey.
I have reviewed your application and find no reason for
your being disqualifeid for the Second Reserve of the American Red
Cross Nursing Service. You understand, I am sure, that we are not
now enrolling the usual number of applicants in this reserve due to
the pressure of work at national headquarters in the matter of
military nurses. lie are, however, making an exception in the case
of UNRRA applicants. We are, therefore, approving your application
and you will receive the necessary credentials in a short time.
In regard to your offer of volunteer service to the Red
Cross, I can only say that we would be extremely grateful if you could
see your way clear to helping us with some of the emergency vork. For
the last three weeks we have had several UNRRA nurses wrking with us
as volunteers during the time they have been waiting to go overseas.
One by one they have dropped out until we have only four left. It has
been a heaven sent help and we would be most happy to have more of the
same kind.
We of the Red Cross feel that we have a definite professional
responsibility to perform at this time and we are greatly handicapped
because of the War Manpower Commission situation. If your plans make
it possible for you to come to Washington for regular volunteer work,
I shall be most happy to hear from you.
Sincérely yours,
Mary c. Houston
Asst. to the Director
Nursing Service
