Trained Nurse Dies
In Boston at 89

BOSTON, April17.-Miss Linday
A. J. Richards, the first trained
nurse Florence in Nightingale, of died here
America and a friend of
today at the age 89
Born in Pottsdam, N.Y., July
27, 1841, she was the first appli-
cant and first graduate of the
first school of nursing in the
country, established by the New
England Hospital for Women and
Children in September, 1873.
After work in the Bellevue Hos-
pital Training School in New
York, she visited European hos-
pitals for study and in 1885 went
to Japan to organize a nurses'
this school. country Later and she directed returned schools in- to
in various American cities,
cluding Kalamazoo, Mich. For
the past four years she had been
confined to the Northboro Nursing
School, where she died.
