My dear Miss Richardson:
We have you shheduled to sail about June 5thWe can only give an
D
approximate date, but Dr. Babeock of the Division of Trensportation will
send you definite instructions concerning this and all other business
matters, and may I request that you do not leave your home until you
have received and executed his instructions. This is essential if you
are to secure your passport.
I am enclosing a circular of information which gives you dotailed
instructions concerning material for your passport. I would suggest that
you secure immediately the information necessary, and I would further
suggest that you have three (3) dozen photographs, instead of the two (2)
dozen mentioned in the circular and that the size of the head should not
be more than 1 by 12 inches in order to fit some of the papers, and that
no hat should be worn. These phtbographs should cost not more than 50
cents to one dollar a dozen, and should be gotten as reasonably as possible.
In the cities where there is frequent request for passports, the regulation
phübograph can be obtained for about this rice. In the case of nurses not
citizens of the U. S., it will be necessary to make application for pass-
pert to the Consul representing thin country.
The term of service is for the period of the war, but nurse may be
released at the expiration on one year if the reasons for their requests
for release meet with the approval of the authorites. Nurses sent over
under the Red Cross are expected to remain in this service and requests
for transfer to the military servico will not be considered.
We request that you pay your own transportation to New York securing
vouchers for all expenditures and presenting these with your bills at the
New York Office for reimbursement. You are allowed hotel bill for 3 days
prior to the date on which you are bdoked to sail at $3.00 a day, and for
any time you may be held in New York after that date, as the ships rarely
sail on the designated date. You will probably have from three to six
days extra in New York, thus having full time for any preparations it
19 necessary to make.
You are allowed salary at $2.00 a day from date of leaving home to
date on which booked to sail. If you are held in New York after that
time, the additional salary will be paid in France.
