    "ocrText": "September 22, 1917.\nMiss Winnifred Ryan,\n2708 Chowen Avenue,\nMinneapolis, Minn.\nMy dear Miss Ryan:\nI have just yired you to know if you can join a Pediatric\nUnit sailing October 6th and instructed you to make immediate\napplication for your passport, stating that the necessary let-\nter of endorsement of your appli ation is being hold here. It\nis necessary that you make this application immediately if you\nhave not already done so upon receipt 6£ this letter.\nYou will need a generous supply of warm clothing, heavy\nunderwear, a warm sweater, at least two dozen pairs of stockings,\nand six or eight pairs of heavy shoes. The uniforms, both street\nand gray crepe will be issued to you in New Yor, also the hat,\ncoat and rubber goods can be purchased there for a moderate sum\nif it is not given by the Red Cross.\nThe Red Cross has rec ntly appropriated a certain sum for\nnurses' equipment. I cannot give you the details of this at\npresent, but may I state that you keep bills of all the articles\nthat you have to buy other than those you would have gotten for\nthis special service so that they can be presented with your\nexpense account should an expense account be required. It may\nbe that the Red Cross will simply issue to e ach nurses a sum\nof money considered equivalent to cover the expenditures.\nAs I have stated, the details have not ryetbeen arranged.\nI will wire you when to report in New York. It will\nprobably be about the 2nd of Octoher.\nHoping that you will be able to accept this assignment,\nI am,\nVery truly yours,\nLM/A\nDirector, Bureau of Nursing Servi ce."
