Miss Annie Mc Cauley,
91 Carringto Avery
READ CAREFULLY AND OBSERVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
Providence, R. I.
Oct. 24, 1918
My dear Miss
Your application for foreign service under the Red Cross has been received
at this office. The Bureau of Personnel will send you definite instructions con-
cerning your date of sailing, and may I request that you do not leave your home
until you have received these instructions.
I am enclosing circulars of information which give you detailed instructions
concerning equipment, insurance, etc.
The term of service is for the period of the War, but nurses may be released
at the expiration of one year if the reasons given for release meet with approval.
Nurses sent over under the Red Cross are expected. to remain in this service and
requests for transfer to, the military service cannot be considered.
You are al lowed salary, which is $70.00 per month, from date of leaving home
to date on which you are booked to sail. If you are held in New York after that
time the additional salary will paid in France. During this time, as you are
in the employment of the Red Cross, you. will be expected, to perform such service
as may be assigned to you by the Division Director of Nursing at 44 East 23rd
Street. You may make such allotment as you may desire of your salary before
leaving this country. After sailing, however, there can be no change made in
the method of payment of salaries. Forms for this purpose will be provided after
reaching New York.
All business arrangements are made by the Bureau of Personnel whose instruc-
tions you will receive, and may I. repeat that you should not leave your home
until you have received and carried them out.
You should report, as soon after arrivel in New York as possible, to Miss
Florence Johnson at 44. East 23rd Street. Miss Johnson is the representative of
the Nursing Service and will see that you receive your equipment and will direct
you to the Bureau of Personnel for necessary information concerning your pass-
port and transportation at 222 Fourth Avenue.
