Mrs Drylus file August 23, 1943 Miss Stefanie Schlesinger Chief Nurse Wahiawa Emergency Hospital Honolulu, T. H. My dear Miss Schlesinger: I have your letter of August 9, giving the very interesting account of the program which you are starting with the nurses at Wahiawa. I feel sure that plans of the general type which you have indicated are very appropriate and undoubtedly you are working closely with Miss Mac Lachlan in developing these programs. Miss MacLachlan has the matter very much at heart and will appreciate your part indeed. Perhaps you have read the article in the American Journal of Nursing entitled "This Waiting "War." The problem the nurses in Hawaii arefacing is by no means unique with them. It is a problem in even the most active areas of war. Your question regarding the uniform brings up points to which we have given a good deal of attention at different stages of the unit. When the unit Was first organized under the Red Cross even the Army and Navy had no outdoor uniform for their nurses in warm climates. When the unit was taken over by the Office of Covilian Defense on October 1, 1942, the Red Cross and the O.C.D. agreed these nurses might continue with the indoor Red Cross identification although such identification has never elsewhere been allowed except in the case of nurses actually under the employ of the American Red Cross. I would discuss with Miss MacLachlan if I were you the ques- tion of quarters for the nurses on the ships coming to Hawaii as compared with the quarters given to Army and Navy nurses, as the arrangements for the quarters during transportation is made through the Office of Civilian Defense. I am taking the liberty of sending to Miss MacLahn a copy of my letter. With all best wishes for your work, I am Sincerely yours, Virginia M. Dunbar Assistant Director VMD: EBG Nursing Service cet Mia
