June Mrs. Edna L. Shane, Seventeen o/o Belmont Coal Co.. 1918 Crownhill, W.Va. Dear Madam: In reply to your telegram of June 14, would say that we took the matter of your application up with the Bureau of Citizenship of the Department of State when making our daily call there this morning. We find they received your applica- tion on the 31st of May and as it was lacking a sworn statement that you had no near male relative in the Army or navy, Red Cross, Y.M.C.A., Knights of Columbus, or other independent Relief organizations overseas, it was returned on the 37th of May, according to the letter written at that time by the State Department to you, at Benton Harbor, Mich. but it seems the application itsulf was sent by the State Department to the Clerk of the Circuit Court, at St. Joseph, Mo., instead of St. Joseph, Mich. On the 4th of June the Clork of the Court at St. Joseph, Mo., returned it to the State Department, and it has been lying in their hands ever since. It seems that they wrote you again on the 8th of June, instructing you to see the Clerk of the Court, at St. Joseph, Mich. How- ever, to clear the matter up, it will only be neceg- sary for you to send me the affidavit, as outlined, regarding your near male relatives, and we will then see that the passport goes up to New York with all possible beste. Very truly yours, Assistant Manager, Department of Equipment, Transportation and Passports. RBP/JEH
