My dear Miss Butler:
the
I am sorry that I cannot help you out but Gertrude
Mary Smith is not even a name to me.
Miss Farquhar, a graduate of the Boston Children's
Hospital of about 1900 or 1901, served under the Red Cross in
the devastated areas in Italy and she may remember Miss Smith.
Her name and hospital may help you identify her. She worked
with us a very short time in Genoa.
I do not even remember the name of the Red Cross
nurse who was in charge of the American Hospital in Rome and
who, I believe, was also in charge of the American nurses in
Italy not with the Tuberculosis Commission, but undoubtedly
the records will help you out there. Many of the sick nurses
were carried to Rome or cared for under nurses not in the
Commission.
Mrs. Charlotte Heilman in Athens served in the
devastated areas and through the influenza before joining
the Tuberculosis group. It is a far cry from Washington to
Athens but Mrs. Heilman has an excellent memory and if she
knew Miss Smith, perhaps would remember the way she did her
hair, how long she was ill and all about her. I found Mrs.
Heilman an exceedingly interesting woman and very able.
With best wishes, believe me
Sincerely yours,
something

Edna L. Foley,
