Miss Sara Shaw,
c/o Miss K. c. de Long,
Bellevue Hospital,
New York City.
My dear Miss Shaw:
One of the nurses who gérved in Rimini, Italy, where, I believe
you were Chief Nurse, Miss Gertrude Smith, has been reported to us as seriously
ill, the trouble, according to her physiciane probably dating back to an attack
of influenza which she had. while on duty in Italy. In preparing this case to
present to the Insurance Company for the insurance which the Red Cross took out
for nurses assigned abroad under its auspices during the war, we find there is
no record of this illness during Miss Smith's service.
We are very anxious
to establish her claim as she will be very greatly in need of this help during
the period of convalescence.
Miss Smith has made a very brave struggle since her return from
overseas to regain her health and this has been a very great neavous strain upon
her, so nuch so that there was a sudden onset of a certain type of mental disturb-
ance and she has had to give up her work at Belmont Hospital, Worcester, Mass.
While the acute stage only lasted a few days, she is now at the home of a sister
and will remain there temporarily until other arrangements can be made for her.
As the girl is entirely dependent upon her own resources, we are interested in her
and we feel sure you will give us any information you may remember regarding her.
We would like if possible, the approximate dates or length of time of the illness
which Miss Smith had while in service, the name of the doctor who attended her
during her illness, though you probably will not recall the latter, and copies of
any reports or statements you may still have in your possession which would include
information relative to this case.
Any of these would be helpful to us. You
may not know that there were no reports sent to Headquarters from the Italian Com-
mission - by this I mean, reports of the mirses' work, conduct and heal th.
If you know of anyone who, you feel, was closer in touch with Miss
Smith than you were, kindly give us the name and we will write to see if we can se-
cure more detailed information.
I am writing at this t'ime for Miss Noyes, as we are anxious to get
this case to our Insurance Adjuster as soon as possible.
In addition, if you
know what Miss Smith's health was upon release from service, this would also be of
assistance to us.
Thanking you for your early attention to this request, be-
lieve me as
Very sincerely yours,
IFB/B
