Referred to
the
Yesterday, through the Worcester Chapter
Secretary, I was asked for advice regarding an enrolled Red Cross Nurse,
who was in a serious mental condition. This nurse is Miss Gertrude
Smith, who was on staff duty at the Belmont Hospital in Worcester.
Miss Cameron was in Worcester this morning and has just telephoned me
that she has seen the letter written by Miss Fletcher from Bay Shore,
to
whom an appeal had also been sent from this Worcester Chapter Secretary.
I understand from Miss Cameron that wiss Fletcher has referred the matter
directly to you, and that she wrote to the Worcester Secretary, saying
that Miss Sophie Nelson can give us more complete information regarding
Miss Smith whom she knows well. I also understand that Miss Smith has
recently been with Miss Fletcher at Bay Shore, and that through the
Red Cross, she was helped previously.
Miss Cameron tells me that today Miss Smith's
sister took her from the hospital to her own home which is here in
Revere. This surprised me, as I understood her condition was too serious
to be outside of the hospital.
Miss Cameron tells me that the two
sisters have had some unfortunate unfriendly misunderstanding, and there
was a pathetic meeting. Evidently it was deemed wise to let this benefit
of the sister's friendliness continue. However, I am particularly anxious
to know what I should do regarding this situation.
Dr. Holmes at the Bedmont Hospital feels
that Miss Smith has several months' illness ahead. It happens that a
relative of her sister'sHusband has had experience as an attendant nurse
at the State Hospital in Worcester. She now lives near the sister's home
in Revere, and can be with Miss Smith while the sister is at work here in
Boston. This word has come in from Miss Cameron too late to reach either
Miss Sophie Nelson or the sister who will not be working this afternoon,
Saturday.
