Young\nRecord Supervisor\nMetropolitan Life Insurance Company\nNew York City, N.Y.\nDear Mr. Young:\nPlease refer to your letter of March 29, 1943 addressed to\nAmerican National Red Cross, attention Mr. J. 0. Thornton, Assistant\nNational Director of Accounts, relative to a request submitted to you by\nMrs. Mabel M. Somerville, mother of Miss Margaret Somerville, for the\nconversion of her daughter's group life insurance into an individual policy.\nIt appears from your letter that in January 1943 Mrs. Somerville\nrequested such conversion, but that since more than 31 days had elapsed from\nthe date Miss Somerville's insurance was cancelled by our Insurance Registry\nSection you informed Mrs. Somerville that her request was not in order.\nMiss Margaret Somerville was one of a group of Red Cross Nurses\nassigned to duty at the American Red Cross-Harvard Hospital in England.\nOn December 27, 1940, before leaving the United States, her\nservice head at National Headquarters mailed her a brief mimeographed state-\nment on the life insurance and sickness and accident insurance which the\nRed Cross was providing for its overseas personnel. This statement was dated\nDecember 5, 1940. In the paragraph covering \"Life Insurance\" it was stated:\n\"This insurance may, at the option of the worker and upon her\nreturn to the United States and termination of employment, be\nconverted without medical examination into any of the usual\nforms by\nThe Life Insurance at rates to\nMetropolitan of life insurance, excepting Company term insurance, applicable written\nthe attained age and class of risk.\"\nWhile enroute to England the vessal on which Miss Somerville was a\npassenger was torpedoed and she and three other nurses spent nineteen days in\nan open life boat before they wers picked up by a British Destroyer and taken\nto England. A little later she took up her duties at the hospital. On August 1,\n1942 she became ill and on August 24, 1942 she underwent a kidney operation."
