April 22,1943
Insurance
Mr. Hammer, Accounts
In accordance with your memo to Mr. Hendrix dated
April 12, the following are the facts concerning payments made by the
Red Cross to Miss Margaret Somerville, Harvard Hospital Nurse, which
were over and above those we were required to make.
According to our agreement with the Traveler's Insurance
Company, the Red Cross was to pay the medical expenses and salary of
Miss Somerville for the first four weeks of her illness, thus we were
responsible for all her expenses for the period August 1-28, 1942 both
inclusive. Please be advised that our records show payments to Miss
Somerville during this period totaling $123.29; this amount represents
$74.67 in salary payment for the period at the rate of $80.00 per month
and $48.62 for maintenance and hospital care. There were no medical
charges during this period other than a U.S. Army hospital mess bill
and this is included in the above total for maintenance.
During the period August 29, 1942 through February 28,
1943, for which we were not liable for Miss Somerville's expenses, we
made payments to her totaling $771.20. Of this amount, $485.33
represented salary for the period at the rate of $80.00 per month;
$29.04 represents the cost of medicines and transportation costs of
three trips from Catskill to Albany, N.Y. for medical treatment by Dr.
Milner; and $256.83 represents charges for travel and maintenance for
the period.
