Mitchell\nApril 16, 1943\nDir., Insular & Forsign Operations\nMr. Mulhall\nMiss Margaret Somerville\nMiss Margaret Somerville, one of the nurses assigned to duty\nwith the American Red Cross - Harvard Field Hospital Unit, England, wes\nplaced on our payroll June 1, 1941. She was a passenger on the SS Vigrid\nwhich was carrying a group of our nurses to Englend and which was torpedoed.\nMiss Somerville spent some days in an open boat before being picked up\nby a destroyer and taken to England.\nWhile on duty at American Red Cross - Harvard Field Hospital,\nshe\nwas taken ill. She was admitted to Second General Hospital, A.P.O. 647,\nU. S. Arny, and on sugust 24, 1942, underwent a kidney operation. She\nwas discharged from the hospital Octobar 10, 194,2. She arrived back in\nthe United States by Ulipp er November 12, 1942, and reached her home November 13.\nComplete documents to support claim under our Overseas Sickness\nand Accident Policy with the Travalers Insurance Company werg received in\nInsurance Department at National Headquarters by December 14, 1942, and were\nforwarded to the Travelers Insurance Company.\nThe following checks payable to the Amorican National Red Cross\nhave been received rapresenting insurance payments in the case of Miss\nSomerville:\nCheck No.\nDate\nAmount\nPeriod dovered\nF-151542\n$400\nAug .29/42 a.m. to Dec. 19/42 a.m.\nF-151815\n2/5/43\n300\nDec.19/42\nto Mar. 3/43\nF-151928\n4/10/43\n100\nMarch 13/43 a.m. to Apr. 10/43 Gelle\n$800 Total Amount received.\nInstructions are requested as to what portion, if any, of the\nproceeds of these checks shall be withheld by the Red Cross befor: settlement\nis made with Miss Somerville. In this connection I attach original of letter\ndated April 22 and letter dated April 23, 1943, addressed to me by Mr. Hammer,\nAssistant to the National Director of Accounting.\nF. J.
