Dear Mrs. Somervilles
As Miss Beard has been in the office only a very few days in the interval
since your letter arrived, I thought I would like to write you giving further information
about federal scholarships which are now available pending any decision regarding the use
of the Breckenridge Fund. The obtaining of a federal scholarship does not at all preclude
the possibility of help from the Breckenridge Fund and as new federal appropriations are
available, every nurse who is considering study should know about them.
Information about available scholarships should be obtained through the
director of the school which the nurse chooses for her post graduate study and it is nec-
essary for the nurse to make the arrangements through the individual school. No doubt,
you have access to the American Journal of Nursing and as the information given there is
so much more complete than I could give it; I know you would be interested particularly in
the April issure, page 392. This gives a list of schools offering programs including those
offering programs this summer.
As there have been many questions raised as to undertaking study at this
particular time when nurses are so badly needed, I think you would be interested also in
the statement made by the Procurement and Assignment Service of the War Manpower Commission
approving under certain conditions, post graduate study to prepare nurses for essential po-
sitions. This was in the American Journal of Nursing, November, 1943, page 978. This will
give you some basis for advising Margaret.
If Margaret plans to study, I hope you will encourage her to inquire into
the federal funds available and make application. I know that the committee on the Breck-
enridge Fund would like to have information on what steps have been taken in this respect
before taking any final action. I believe it would be well for you to take this up with
her and/ask her, after making tentative plans for study and investigating the possibility of
federal funds, to write to Miss Beard applying for further scholarship aid from the Breck-
enridge Fund.
Sincerely yours,
Virginia Dunbar
