t rs. E June 25,1936 Mrs. Ella F. Stackable Gregory 4 Michigan lity dear Ars. Stackable: Since writing your letter of trenty-second, you undoubtedly have learned of Miss Noyes' sudden death on June third. She died in her car on her way to the office that day. While the shock of her death has been very great and her loss irreparable, still we rejoice that she did not have to suffer a long illness which she had dreaded. in reply to your letter, knowing the situation very well because I have several times had occasion to go through your folder, I am sorry to inform you that in spite of your service you are not eligible for the bonus due to the fact that you were never federalized and assigned to serve directly under the Army or the Navy during the war. We are indeed sorry that provision was never made for the group of Red Cross nurses vho rendered fine service directly under the American Red Cross. There have been several attempts made to bring this matter to the attention of Congress but up to the present date the effort made have not been successful. It was always a great cause for regret on liss Noyes' part but you may be sure that she did everything in her power to take care of tis group of nurses;there were 604 and I speak feel- ingly because I was one of the nurses. However, I have never made any attempt to secure any of the compensations accruing to the ex- service men or women for the reason that 1 felt greatly honored is being allowed to render service with the American Red Cross in' France, and I hope that you too feel the same way about your ser- vice which was outstanding and always greatly appreciated by the American Red Cross. Very sincerely yours Ida P. Butler Acting Director of Nursing National Headquarters IFB/img
