Mr. James L. Barton, Chairman,
Near East Relief,
1 Madison Averne,
New York City.
My dear Mr. Barton:
A communication from one of our enrólled Red Cross nurses,
Miss Ada Holden Stafford, asking me to send you a record of her work
with us, has been received. I have written to Miss Stafford stating
that we felt sure that the Neas East would refer to us before sending
a Red Cross nurse abroad, in order to obtain a record of her service.
Therefore it would not be necessary for me to write a special letter
concerning the character of her service with us.
It brings to my attention, however, the statement made by
Mr. Fowle in confierence with me a few days ago, that the Near East was
receiving many applications for service from Red Eross murses. I feel
sure that I can rely upon you to confer with us before assigning nurses
to service, for I believe that in your effort to maintain the highest
standards you would wish to possess all the information available con-
cerning the fitness of an applicant for service.
For example, in the
case of Miss Stafford, I ahould not be willing to recommend her for over-
seas service.
Very truly yours,
Director, Department of Nursing
