Miss /da Holden Stafford
87 Larch Street,
Providence, R. I.
My dear Miss Stafford:
Your letter to Miss Sherman has been referred to us
because you have asked for public health work. In this connection allow us
to say that the need for public health nurses to do construction work
abroad is very indefinite. All the present personnel for foreign servico
has been canceled and there has been no indication from the foreign countries
that we shall be asked in the future to send more nurses to do public health
work. Howover as you probably know there are many opportunities for such
service in this count ry and we should be glad to interest you in the Town
and Country Nursing Service which is the permanent work of this Bureau.
This Service consists in the placing of woll qualified
public health nurses in small communities, townships and counties, in
organizations controlled by private philanthropy, Red Cross Chapters,
industrial concerns, Boards of Health, Boards of Education and County
Supervisors or other public officials. Such organizations affiliate
with
the Towm and Country Nursing Service by agreeing to certain required standards.
The nurse's work is under the direction of the local organization. The
Towm and Country Nursing Service simply maintains an advisory relation
with the nurse and her Board through correspondence, reports, and super-
visory visits. 111 kinds of public health nursing are carried on by these
orgenizations, some doing bedside nursing, others specializing in infant
welfare or tuberculosis work and others in industrial welfare work or school
inspection, each following its own greatest need and inclination.
Your application papers do not give the names and
addresses of those who employed you while doing public health work. We
should wish to write to them for credentials in the event that you favor-
ably consider an appointment under our Bureau. Anticipating an early reply
and thanking you for your interest in the Red Cross, I am
Yours sincerely,
Assistant to the Director,
CVD/MM
Red Cross Bureau of Public Health Nursing.
