Clarke\nSecretary, Home Service\nBuffalo Chapter, Anerican Red Cross\n268 Main Street\nBuffelo, New York\nMy dear Miss Clerkes\nIn reply to your letter of January 18th asking\nus regarding the military status of Mergaret A. Strycker, we have\nbeen corresponding about this matter since 1927 and the best that\nwe con do for you is to quote from other letters which have been\nwitten beceuse there is only one reply to your question.\nAccording to Miss Strycker's war record she is\nnot eligible for the compensations, bonuses and memberships that were\ngiven to the ex-service man and woman. In order to be perfectly\nsure of this statement we corresponded mith the Vier Department and\nfound that the status of the hospital with which Miss Strycker was\nconnected was never military. While Miss Strycker may have been\nregistered as a member of the American personnel at the French\nMinistry of War, she was never Federalized or inducted into service\nas a reserve nurse in the Army Nurse Corps of the U. S. Army.\nIf any exception: have becn made for Amorican\ncitizens who served with the French Government, then Miss Strycker\nmight be eligible for the nembership in which she is interested,\nbut be heve no record of this type on file. Our Instructions from\nthe War Department have almegé been that in order to be eligible\nfor the advantages accruing to the ex-eervice mon and women who\nserved with the American Expeditionary Forces in France or in the\nCantonments in this country, it was necessary to have been Federalized\nor inducted into Army service. Ee have a very record of Miss\nStrycker's service and considerable correspondence regarding her\nmilitary statua for the reason that several attenpts hove been mede\nto give her this status.\nThe statement regarding Miss Strycker's service\nin your letter is correct but none of it was service directly under\nthe American Expeditionary Forces, She went to Europe under the\nAnerican Red Grosa and was assigned by the American Red Cross to\nthe Various services in Englend and France.
