Noyes\n(Nurse)\nDirector\nChairman National Committee\nRed Cross Nursing Service\nA\nAmerican Red Cross\nWashington, D.C.\nMy dear Miss Noyes:\nThe above named nurse has called at this office in an effort to have\nher service record clarified so as to show her work with the U.S. Army.\nHer story is as follows:\nShe enlisted in the Red Cross Nursing Service and sailed from New York\nCity, September 13, 1914 in Red Cross Unit D, assigned to england. This\ngroup of nurses was sent to the Navy Hospital at Portsmouth, England\nand inducted into the English Naval Dept. and stayed at this hospital\nfor two months. At this time the Unit was transferred to the English\nArmy Service and assigned to the Women's War Hospital at Paighton,\nEngland. She remained there until October 10, 1915, when she signed\nwith the French Government at Nawyll-Sur-Seine and remained there\nuntil July 22, 1917, at which time the U.S. Government took this\nhospital over and made it U.S. Military Hos ital #l.\nMiss Grace Leonard, a Chief Army Nurse was assigned to the station\nas Miss St. John Aikens, who served as Superintendent of Nurses prior\nto the army regime was not a certified army nurse, therefore Miss\nAikens was demoted and Miss Leonard assumed the Chief Nurse's\nresponsibilities until such time as Miss Aikens took her examinations\nand was promoted to the grade of Chief Nurse. Miss Leonard was then\ntransferred to another U.S. Army Hospital. Major Peed was the Command-\ning Officer, and from July 22, 1917 until Miss Strycker left the\nservice on December 27, 1917 at Military Hospital #1, she was paid\nby the J.S. Government. When she left the hospital Major Peed gave\nthem a discharge from service, from aheold French discharge book and\nshe has never been able to get a discharge from the U.S. Army which\nshe believes is due her for this period of time.\nOn December 27, 1917, Miss Strycker again signed up with the Red Cross\nfor Italian duty and remained there until her return to America."
