THE AMERICAN NATIONAL RED CROSS PACIFIC BRANCH F C SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA 9 T P a Y El Centro Hospital El Centro, California Oct. 19, 1941 My dear Captain Weder: Don't think for one minute that I particularly relish the idea of being placed in a "deferred status" on your list. I feel that I have as deep and abiding a love of country as anyone else in these United States and I want to work for "Uncle Sam," only, - I can't afford to be so patriotic. Of course you know that, if the Army and Navy Nurse Corps offered sufficient inducement or made it worth our while, nurses by the score would enter the service and there would be no usch thing as an "acute emergency" in the nursing field. But what do you do? You get us in there and give us the relative rank of a Second Lieutenant, without the relative pay, an empty sort of glory it seems to me. And, further than that, what assurance have wé that we will be given the type of work we want to do and for which we are best fitted? Personally, I do not like to work with patients in any capacity, except the emergency of operating rooms, and have been told plainly that I am "just no damn good on the floor," but I have told also that I am good in surgery - as long as I am on my own I can work in surgery, exclusively. If I am misjudging the service in any, I would be most happy to know wherein I am mistaken. Very truly yours, FARA SULLIVAN, R.N. Copy f send Benfilling
