August 25, 1942 Lieutenant Commander Sue Dauser Superintendent Navy Nurse/Corps Surgeon General of the Navy Washington, D. C. Dear Miss Dauser: I am enclosing herewith the 761 cards for Miss Audrey Marie Tate, Those mother has called this office indicating that Misa Tate is very anxious to be grented the privilege of submitting to a physical examination to determine her physical qualifications for service with the Navy Nurse Corps. Miss Tate was previously disqualified for service with the Army because an X-ray showed a pre-spondylolisthesis, with ab- sence of bony fusion of pedicle of 5th lumbar vertebra. She VES subsequently re-checked by other physicians at the Walter Reed General Hospital who could find nothing wrong.. Apparently the Medical Board did not wish to review her case in the light of the findings of these other officers at Walter Reed. As the young woman is extremely anxious to get into ser- vice and as you have indicated that it was possible to arrange for a physical examination for any nurse who desired service, we have consented to refer her cards to you for your consideration. We had previously transferred her to the Second Reserve because it seemed that, in all probability, she would not qualify for service with the Navy if not found accepible to the Army. We are leaving her in this classification, therefore, until we hear definitely from you in regard to her acceptance or rejection. Sincerely yours, GSB:mab Gertrude S. Banfield Ass' t. Director, Nursing Service
