February 2, 1932 Miss Helen Teal, Exec. Secy., Indiana State Nursest Association, 1211 Circle Tower, Indianapolis, Indiana. My dear Miss Teal: In reply to your letter, we are delighted to note that you are getting into Red Cross affairs and we hope that some one will make a suggestion to the Executive Committee of the State Nurses Association when it meets, to nominate you as one of the members of the State Committee for the following year. It would be quite nice to have you linked up with the Red Cross Nursing Service in Indiana. Answering your last paragraph first, I am indeed afraid that there has been a great change in Florida since you were there. While there is a great deal of interest in the Red Cross and quite a number of enrolled Red Cross nurses in Florida, my visit there led me to believe that there was too much politics mixed up in nursing affairs in that State. I only wish that we could get away from it for it is always hard to keep the Red Cross out of these State politics when they exist to such an extent as they do in Florida. I am afraid I cannot help you very much relative to the choice of books which tell the story of the American Red Cross. I still believe that there is no book that can ever take the place of the "Official History" even if it does look formidable. It is a book so well written and the story is so interestingly told, that it seems to me even a lay person might read it with considerable interest if only for the purpose of learning the service women rendered during the Great War. I have found that many libraries were very glad to place the book on their shelves and, of course, we believe that every train- ing school library should possess it. In some instances the nurses have purchased the book themselves from class funds, et cetera, and presented it to their training school. Of course, Miss Pickett's book, "The Origin, Purpose and Services of the American Red Cross" is still popular and the price is popular - fifty cents, and it may be obtained from National Headquarters. Miss Mabel Boardman's book, "Under the Red Cross Flag" is also read quite extensively and may be obtained here, I do not know the price.
