There THE AMERICAN RED Cross PACIFIC AREA A.R.C. MAIL ROOM RECEIVED h. TO Miss Mary Beard - National Headquarters DATE May 23, 1942 MAY 2 71942 Boferred to FROM Miss Gladyce L. Badger - Pacific Area SUBJECT must Margas On May 5th you wrote a memorandum to Miss Sarah Margaret Thomas, R. N., in response to a letter which she wrote to you, criticizing the lay leadership of her local chap- ter. I have known Miss Thomas over a period of years, and re- gard her as a problem. She is an individual who must work alone. She was formerly employed by the Idaho Tuberculosis Association and went about over the state teaching a short Home Nursing Course, but as far as I know, in all the years she worked in Idaho she never did teach a course for Red Cross certification. Recently she retired and is liv- ing in San Leandro. She has started to teach Home Nursing under Adult Education, and is authorized by the Red Cross. However, criticisms have come to me from nurses connected with the University, indicating that her teaching is not satisfactory in that she uses miniature equipment, and the students do not have an opportunity to practice. We have been thinking of ways in which we might be able to approach this problem. Gadya JBulge (Miss) Gladyce L. Badger Director, Nursing Service Pacific Area - A.R.C. 5
