Extract taken from letter from Miss Torrance to Miss Noyes, June 20, 1925. The Bulgarian Red Cross and others responsible for this school are very insistant that I stay on. Mr. Bicknell's letter mentioned that my leaving is because of personal reasons (i.e. his letter to the Red Cross) and I am repeatedly reminded thatit rests entirely with me whether I stay on longer - they really are most kind in their intentions, for I do believe that they think I have done a good work, and want me to know that they appreciate it, and that they think no one else will answer. The fact is that anyone sent here by the ARCNS who had a fixed purpose and some ideas would have accomplished as much as I have and probably more, - what is done until now is due to the cooperative efforts of several people. Miss LeGros did a great work of housecleaning around here in more ways than one. I do regret t that in the first place we did not have a larger better staff, for we would have gotten on faster and with less fumbling, - now I say that with conviction, but all t the time that has passed I have not realized what a difference it would have made But even though these good people are so insistant, I feel that I must be firm with my personal reasons, the most important of which is to make room for more capable personnel for the business. This reason which I call the most important was not so well formed in my mind earlier, but it is now pretty well grounded. Besides this, I am as you know most anxious to get back to my country and my people. If only one years more delay would be the best thing for the work here to which I have already put a lot of time and strength, I know I ought not to insist but anyone who knows training school work will see that maybe I have done a pasable job for the beginning when there were almost no desirable students to work over, no spirit of cooperation or faith in one another in the air, and lots of intriguing going on, but now there is the state of effairs that will permit a first rate program, and calls for a specialist. Also I am not real well and find myself often without ideas that used to come readily. So please, considering these things, make the desired decision if this question is brought up anew as it may be, for I understand that another request is being sent from B.R.C. to Washington on this subject. Please do not leave it entirely to me to refuse t their pleas. " Letter answered by Miss Butler, July 10, 1925. " Miss Noyes is entirely sympathetic with all that you say about your returning to this country after your very out-standing service in the Bulgarian School, and in event of Mr. Bicknell hearing from the Bulgarian Red Cross, we will certainly advise that the present arrangement be not changed, i.e., that Miss Goff will remain. As Miss Noyes will be with you in a few weeks nothing will need to be settled until she arrives. I am sure that she will greatly enjoy visiting together, and I know that she is gooking forward to her visit with you. " see letter filed 502. Bulgarian School (Corres )
