Extract taken from letter from Miss Rachel Torrance to Miss Noyes, 2/11/25. " This is my proposition about representation from here at the Helsingfors meet- That Miss Goff and Miss Sendova go, anyway Miss Goff, and that I stay here until her return and then retire. First, I should answer your proposition about one of us going from here about the first of july and the other the first of January. If the appropriation cannot support more, and cannot be renewed, I think that is the best plan - i.e. it is better than having both American nurses leave at one time so soon. The best thing for the school is to have American nurses stay on here for at least two years after this fall. Everyone at all interested in it says the same thing- even the Red Cross people, who, even while saying it do nothing to make it possible or probable The person who should stay on is Miss Goff. She is a specialist in this work it is plain to be seen while I am not. I have learned a lot during my stay here, and feel that something has really been accomplished, but not near so much as would have been had Miss Goff been here in the first place Miss LeGros was faithful in her work and did a lot in the hospital end of the program, but she is not at all a"trainer", which fact she herself acknowledges. Miss Goff's ability in training school work is superior to mine, and she is ready to stay on for a longer period. Also I feel very tired - not so much tired as a feeling that I have run out of energy. When I first came and tried to get things done quickly and in order, and insisted on dispatch, I was told by several of the Redd Cross personnel to learn a little Ordentalski - to practice a little Orientalski, but I scorned such a thing and said that that was the last thing I wanted to learn, but when I compare my energy and practice of order and routine with that of Miss Goff I am greatly troubled for fear that I have unwittingly learned it after all. I recommend without reserve Miss Goff for the post of Director of this school. Her temperment is very different from mine, but we have the same ideals as to the finished product of a School for Nurses, so that I believe the work would not suffer by the change, on that score. I have made mention of this probability in July to the people in the school Committee - in fact I wrote an official letter to the President telling these , your last instructions. The women in that Committee and in the Womens Committee who are really beginning to show live interest are very much disturbed about any change and naturally urge me to stay but I tell you frankly, I think if just one stays, it should be Miss Goff for the best good of the school - she is the better one, This I say without reference to my personal desire to get home, but that is an added argument.
