Myrdear Miss Hay: estov and ed deen ton 11 TO ,slow KYOV
Jent brue ,Attest at Your letter of February 16th has [just reached me. In a
Torrance, she made the same statement tooe othat
she had expected to be relieved Tong before this, etc.- imagine my surprise.
When I saw Miss Torrance in Europe last August, she stated not only her
willingness but her, desire to remain indefinitely, as she had become tremend-
ously interested in the School and its development, and if we were satisfied
she would like to stay on. Not a word was said by her or myself as to send-
ing a successor this autumn. I told her how greatly relieved I was to find
that shelwas withing difficult for me to find a
nurse with the proper qualifications in a short time. I explained to her, in a recent
letterthat in a measure it would have been much easier for us to have found someone
from the out set, as I am sure you will agree with me, that to replace Miss
Torrance at the end of a year by a person without knowledge of the Bulgarian
language or the people created very evident difficultiesfor us, as her un-
familiarity with the situation and the language would probably place her in
an unfavorable position with the Bulgarians, who are devoted to Miss Torrance.
I wrote to Miss Torrance, immediately, expressing my sur-
prise. If she feels that she must leave now, and as the period in which we
will continue our work there is comparatively short, I would suggest that
Miss Legros remain and do the best she can with the Bulgarian nurses who
are
assisting her, possibly sending an assistant. This would be the best I
could do at the present time. Miss Torrance has done a fine piece of work,
and while I should not have selected her at the outset, the special quali-
fications which you mentioned and which you seemed to know so well, seemed
to outweigh her disqualifications.
I have always been doubtful of the wisdom of our returning
to Bulgarianand making an attempt at a modern School of Nursing Education.
In spite of Miss Abbotts desire to have us come back, and her protestations
of assistance, not a single student from the Samakov School has teen diverted
toward the Nursing School. I think this has been very discouraging to Miss
Torrance, who had expected some assistance from that quarters. On the whole,
however, I believe that she has accomplished a great deal, and wrote probably
to you and to me at a period of discouragement. A recent letter is more
optimistic in its character. I have written to her, telling her that if she
feels she must come away immediately that the only thing she can do is to
leave Miss Legros in charge, who I am sure will do the best she can.
Miss Torrance has recently had a visit from her brother,
