July 2nd,1918 Miss Ethol Trainor, 705 Dallas Avenue, Selma, Ala., My dear Miss Trainor: I regret very much to see on your enrollment application that you have a half brother in the services. I have taken upo the matter with the Bureau of Personnel and they have assured me that even a half brother or a step brother debars a nurse from obtaining a passport. We have, however, had a recent cable from the Commissioner of Europe stating that he would make every effort to have the ruling concerning brothers in the service modified. I would, therefore, ask that you wait until we have more definite information concerning this ruling, and in the meantime,I would urge that you do not give up your position or purchase any equipment until definitely requested to do so as you will have ample time to make all necessary arrange- ments. Mr. Hooper has forwarded a copy of your letter of June 24th, to him for the files here, and I wish to state that you are laboring under a misapprehension concerning the assign- ment of base hospital 114. Last October 7 nurses ,especially selected, were sent to England for instruction in Orthopedic work pending the opening of this hospital. All other nursing personnel for this hospital were assigned temporarily to the cantonment before mobilization of the hospital for foreign service. Hoping that this will straighten out the matter of your assignment temporariby in your own mind,an regretting that there has been anything to delay your acceptance for service,I am, Very sincerely yours, LM/MEA P. S. We appreciate your interest in the Red Cross and trust - that we shall soon be able to assign you.
