June 12, 1918. Miss Ethel Trainor, 705 Dallas Street, Selm, Ala. My dear Miss Trainor: Your understand that your action in refusing to accept temporary cantonment service has debarred you from receiving a foreign assignment under the military organization. Your letter from the Superintendent of the Army Narsa Corps states this definitely. We rogest very rouch that you should have placed yourself in such a position as it leaves us powerless to si ve you the military service. However, we have been asked to furnish a number of nur- ses for surgical service in France and if you desire such an assignment will be glad to place your name on the list of murses available for this service. Please do not give up any position which you may hold or make any preparation until you are definitely requested to do so from this office. We can give you no definite date of your assignment at present. There are many formalities that must be complied with before we can even approximitely state the date upon which we would wish you to eail should you. de+ sire this assignment. Neither can We dafinitely promiss nurses a certain assignment in France. We can and do state their qualifications to our representative there, but the marses who go over under the auspices of the Red Cross are expected to accept the assignment to which they ar a detailed without question, as only those on the ground know the naces- sities of the situation from day to day.
