The developments in connection with National Defense and our respon-
sibilities for providing large numbers of nurses for the military forces.
as well as disaster preparedness make it imperative that each member of
the Committee have a definite share in its prescribed work. The Committee
diagram will aid you in outlining a plan of work for each Committee member
in the enrollment of eligible nurses and recruitment for military service.
We believe the chairman should assume leadership of the Committee and
concern herself particularly with the direction of these activities. The
effectiveness of the Committee will depend to a large extent on the
leadership and inspiration provided by the officers.
For your information and guidance, we are sending you under separate
cover the following material:
ARC 779 - Booklet, "Uncle Sam Needs Nurses".
ARC 703
- History and requirements for enrollment.
ARC 710 - Extracts - (Pamphlet to be revised).
ARC 710A - Suggestions for Committee officers.
ARC 710C - Suggestions for key nurses.
ARC 710D - Committee diagram.
Suggestions for stimulating interest in enrollment.
Functions and membership of State Committees.
Form 1546- Agenda for state meetings.
It is highly desirable that the Local Committee develop a cordial
relationship with the Chapters in its jurisdiction so that the Chapter
officials will know where to turn for enrolled Red Cross nurses whenever
they may be needed for any type of service, especially disaster work.
Therefore, may we suggest that you call at the headquarters of the local
Chapter at your earliest convenience in order to acquaint the officials
with your position and responsibilities.
For handling Committee correspondence, please refer to the attached
instructions, which should be carefully observed in order to expedite
action in both the Area Offices and at National Headquarters. Please
feel free to ask questions and to write about your problems and work,
and we shall endeavor to give you every assistance possible.
We greatly appreciate your interest in the Red Cross Nursing
Service in this critical period as indicated by your willingness to
serve as Chairman of your State and Local Committee.
