May 26, 1937 Mrs. Laura Knowlton Turner Vassalboro Maine My dear Mrs. Turner: As you know, it has been our plan, for sometime, to designate certain members of the Maine State and Local Committee on Red Cross Nursing Service as special representatives or "key nurses" in the particular area in which they happen to be living, so as to better serve the Chapters in their respective localities in event of disaster or other emergency requiring the services of Red Gross nurses. You were appointed a member of our Maine State and Local Committee in January 1930 and upon their recommendation we are hereby officially authorizing you to serve as the Committee's key nurse in Kennebec County. The Red Cross Chapters in Kennebec County will be advised of your appointment and in event of a disaster or emergency, or other Chapter activity in connection with which the services of Red Cross nurses may be needed, the Chapter will contact you as the local representative and you will be expected to secure the nurses - the number required for the service - immediately advising Miss Gertrude E. Beal, Central Maine General Hospital, Lewiston, Maine, the Secretary of the Committee, of the action taken. We are asking Miss Beal to see that a list of the Red Cross nurses enrolled with the Committee, who according to their records are living in Kennebec County is sent you and from this list you should choose as far as possible the nurses needed for any Red Cross service. If, however, in event of a disaster you should be unable to secure the necessary number of enrolled Red Cross nurses, you may always call into service graduate nurses who are not enrolled but willing to serve, because after all the important thing is to promptly secure a sufficient number of nurses to take care of the work at hand. In this connec- tion, however, we know we may depend upon you to always call upon nurses suited to the type of service for which they are needed. with We hope that it will be possible for you to attend at least one meeting of the State and Local Committee during the year and undoubtedly the Secretary will notify you when meetings not Mexi are being held. The Committee will, of course, also look to you to do anything in your power to interest nurses in your locality in furni
