Harrison Hockman\nJanuary 29, 1943\nManager, North Atlantic Area\nMarie Peterson\nRegarding the death of\nAsst. to Director\nLaura Knowlton Turner\nNursing Service\nI am sure you have by this time learned of Laura's\nsudden death. The wire I received from her husband, Myron Turner,\nstated that she died suddently from pneumonia and that the funeral\nis to be Saturday, January 30th at 2:20.\nIt certainly cane as & shock to me and to the few who\nare left here at National Headquarters who knew Laura intimately.\nI am sure there is nothing I can tell you about Laura that you do\nnot already know as you worked together and she always spoke of\nyou ao highly. I thought perhaps you would like to have some of\nthe comments which are in her Red Cross enrollment folder in the\nevent you have any thought of a special article for the \"bourier!\nShe 888 enrolled in the Red Cross Nursing Service July\n1920 and after about six years of Chapter work in Pennsylvania\nand in Maine she was assigned to Nursing Field Representative\nMarch 4, 1926. As you will recall she resigned December 31, 1936\nto be married. One of the comments is \"Ten years of faithful\nservice, a devoted loyal Red Crosser. In other places in her\nfolder it tells of her splendid kindly spirit and how much she\nloved the ideals of the Red Cross and how upright and sincere\nshe always was in all of her, efforts. It also speaks of how she\ncarried her work in a quite way and yet WELS a very real leader\nwith an unusual personality and how she was held in high esteem\nby those with whom she worked. Of course, those of us who worked\nwith Laura know how true all of these things are, but thought you\nwould like to know what the comments are in her Red Cross records\nhere at National Headquarters. These are only a few of the\ncomments. Her training school record too is excellent and gives\nevidence of an unusual personality at the time she was in training.\nI can hardly believe that she has gone and have had\nconsiderable correspondence with her recently on various problems\nconcerning the enrollment of Red Cross nurses. I feel so sorry\nfor her husband but especially sorry for her dear father and\nmother, both of whom I have met and realize how dependent they\nwere on her. She was so devoted to them and her only fault was\nthat she worked too hard trying to do for her parents as well as\nlooking after her own family. In a letter I received from her\nlast summer she mentioned her daughter who has finished training\nwas married and one of her sons was overseas in service and the\noldest one was planning to go last October and the youngest boy\nwas to be placed in a boarding school. She has been a grand\nmother to that family and it does seem awfully hard to understand\nwhy she should be taken.\nMarie Peterson\nAssistant to Director\nManagina Camelan"
