SCHOLARSHIP AND LOAN FOR PREPARATION IN PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING
(Retain one copy and send other two copies to Division Director of Nursing)
Scholarships and loans granted to nurses by the American Red Cross are for the
express purpose of preparing the applicant for service in the American Red Cross, and
to this end the recipient is required to promise to enter the Red Cross Public Health
Nursing Service for a period of at least one year. It is important therefore that
the applicant should be genuinely interested in and desirous of undertaking rural
work under the American Red Cross. Each scholarship and loan is granted with the un-
derstanding that the nurse is taking her course for this purpose. It is not expected
that nurses having sufficient financial resources of their own will apply for a schol-
arship or loan. It is understood that nurses will apply for the minimum amount nec-
essary to supplement their own resources. The amount of the scholarship shall not
exceed one fourth the cost of the course; the remainder shall be in the form of a
loan; the total amount granted will not exceed two thirds the cost of the course.
It is also important for the applicant to understand that in accepting a scholar-
ship and loan she commits herself to accept a position with a Red Cross chapter at the
usual salary prevailing among chapters. The applicant is given a reasonable degree of
choice of localities and is never assigned to a position far from her home except of
her own volition but she must understand that she may not limit her choice to her own
town or nearby towns. In order to determine the applicant's qualifications for this
service and the possibility of fulfilling her obligation, the following information
is desired of the applicant:
