COMMITTEE ADVISED &
AREA OFFICE AND
Miss Jeanette Agnes Varfieur
26 North Bend Street
NOV 3 1943
Pawtucket, Rhode Island
My dear Miss Varrieur:
Your physical has been approved by our Red Cross medical advisor
and we are now in a position to offer you an appointment as Staff Nurse
with one of the civilian emergency hospitals in the Hawaiian Islands which
is under the jursidiction of the Emergency Medical and Hospital Service of
The Territorial Office of Civilian Defense in the Territory of Hawaii. This
position carries the salary of $112.50 per month, including full mainte-
nance and the laundering of your uniforms. Your salary will start from the
time you take your Oath of Office in San Francisco, as will also the terms
of your employment with the Office of Civilian Defense, in accordance with
the employment regulations enclosed.
As you have noted, we have advised you to take your own hospital
cape. However, we shall supply you with three Red Cross caps and eight
Red Cross insignia to be worn on your uniforms. These are now being sent
from our Supply Department and should reach you within a short time. This
equipment is in the form of a loan and you will be expected to return
it to this office whenever you terminate your service there.
The required immunizations are smallpox, triple typhoid and tatanus
toxoid. If you have not been vaccinated for smallpox within the past year,
a repeat vaccination is advised. As both the tetanus and typhoid inoculations
are given in a series covering several weeks, you will nees to start these
at once. If your immunizations are not completed before you, leave home,
arrange to take the medication with you, and if an inoculation comes due
while you are in San Francisco, please get in touch with Miss Gladyce
Badger, Civic Auditorium, Larkin & Grove Streets, who is in charge of our
Pacific Area Office, and who will make arrangements for this to be given.
Enclosed are duplicate immunization forms. One is to be returned to this
office, the other you will, keep with you at all times. In case your inocu-
lations have not been completed before you leave the Mainland, please re-
turn one immunization register to this office, indicating the time that the
series will have been completed.
Enclosed please find the following:
1. Employment regulations
2. Supplementary information
3. Duplicate immunization registers
