(1) As chairman of Nursing Care programs, Mrs. Wallace coordinated a
highly successful Mother and Baby Care course. After recruiting professional
assistance, she traveled to Misawa Air Base to attend a qualifying course for
m
instructors. She then adapted an enriched curriculum to the needs of the
families on Wakkanai Air Station, utilizing many military and community
facilities such as the legal office, physician, and military nurses. Mrs.
Wallace spent many hours developing a team teaching approach with the other
Mother and Baby Care instructor and taught at each class. During the six
week session, Mrs. Wallace identified the need for additional assistance for
the Japanese mother, and therefore recruited a Japanese medical interpretor
and held separate classes for these mothers. Mrs. Wallace's interest did
not stop in the classroom. She made several home visits to assist new
parents with problems that arose in the home environment after the arrival
of the baby. There was such a positive response to the classes that many
families were most anxious to attend the next session of classes which is
presently being planned.
In addition, Mrs. Wallace was the coordinator of the Mother's Aide
Course. After recruiting two dependent wives to be the instructors, she
assisted these women in the development and implementation of a pertinent,
interesting group of classes for 70 of our base youth. Utilizing a tele-
vision and radio publicity program after the youth had satisfactorily
completed the designated requirements, Mrs. Wallace provided many families
with confidence and knowledge in young mothers' aides.
(2) For the past year, two days per week, Mrs. Wallace has enthusi-
astically functioned as a hospital assistant. She identified a role which
she felt would be most helpful to hospital and community, and participated
in many different patient care activities as listed in Attachment 2. She
therefore provided freedom to the military nurses in order that they might
be able to do other office activities or whatever might be necessary. Whihe
in the hospital and in the community, Mrs. Wallace constantly provides
valuable health education to base personnel and encourages everyone to seek
medical attention whenever necessary. When Mrs. Wallace becomes aware of
illness in a home, she usually calls the family to inquire if she can
provide any assistance. Many times these calls are followed up by a visit
in the home. She has an outstanding awareness of the needs for health
education in the community and in the home.
(3) Wakkanai Air Station is without a fulltime school health nurse.
When it became obvious that dependent wives would have to fill the position,
Mrs. Wallace was a first volunteer. One day each week she provides emer-
gency first aid, health education and communication between student, school,
and family.
(4) Mrs. Wallace is coordinator of the four volunteer caseworkers at
Wakkanai Air Station. By setting a fine example and conducting discussion
sessions, she has directed an excellent orientation program and instilled
confidence in the caseworkers. She has acquired a centrally located office
