Miss Caroline A. Weaver,
217 East 35th St.,
New York City.
My dear Miss Weaver:
I regret that you have resigned your position
as it may be at least two months before we can prepare you for foreign
duty. Make np attempt to secure your own passport as no attention
would be paid to it and it would be a waste of time. We cannot give
you a passport until your investigation for loyalty has been complete
by the War Department. We will send your name up to 44 East 23rd St.,
and ask them to make out form 200. This is the first step in the pro-
cess.
It is quite possible that Miss Howe might get a
chance to go to Italty, litho we have not been asked to send any lay-
women to that country under the Department of Nursing, this may come
later. I believe I do remember her, was she not a neurasthenic?
Nurses with husbands at the present time are at a great disadvantage,
altho we are utilizing a few of them in the hospitals under the Federal
Public Health Service.
I trust I may be able to see you before you go and
may I advise you to get a good rest. I am sending you 702 which shows
you the equipment that is provided by the Red Cross and gives other in-
formation that will be heapful to you. Some of this is out of date,
especially the information about passports. We are now revising it again.
