February 16, 1933 Miss s. Lillian White c/o Samuel Merritt Hospital Oakland, California My dear Miss White: If it were not for Christmas I. feel sure that I would lose track of a gobd many of my old friends and associates. +herefore, your thristmas card, with its note, was deeply appreciated. You may think otherwise, as I have been so long in acknowledging it, but I am only now getting to the bottom of my basket of Christmas mail. Everything else must take precedence, and the weeks since the holidays have been crowded with all sorts of important "ed Cross and other business. How nice to hear of you once more with a job of your own, and especially the type of work which you are doing in an insti- tution with which you had formerly been connected. While you may liken yourself to Aunt Mary of rejuvénated fame, I have never thought of you in any other way, except as a person of permanent youth - there are such people you know in the world and you I believe are one of them. No doubt you have missed your home and homelife with Miss Hall and the cat. I, too, have & cat with as fancy a name as you have given yours. ile call ours "Scurry" because of his propensity for racing about as if he were a kitten instead of a cat of five years. I did not realize that you ever had a temperature as low as that which you reported in your Christmas letter of the 16th. That was a cold day here, as I recall it, almost the coldest we have had this winter as the temperature on one occasion was 14. However, 24 below séems to be almost unbelievable. We expect such température in North Dakota and Minnesota, and such places, but not on the Pacific Coast. It is thrilling to be in Washington in a way, but not in the way you think as we see but very little of the political end of the city, i.e., the Congress, although we hear a good deal of discussion of their activities. "e /seem to be getting no place, perhaps with the new administration the "wheels may move" but I doubt it. I do not know how you feel about Mr. Hoover, but I certainly think his home state gave him traw deal. I have great admiration for him and great sympathy for he hardly had a fair chance. Again ssuring you, de r Miss White, of my affectionate interest, and with best wishes for the coming year, I remain Sincerely yours National Director, Nursing Service. 6914
