FORED SEP
Miss Lillian Thite,
and to
Director, Nursing Service,
Pacific Division, A.R.C.,
Civic Auditorium,
Larkin & Grove Sts.,
San Francisco, Calif.
PERSONAL
My dear Miss White:
We are distressed to hear of your decision to
resign from Red Cross work, but I have been fearing this ever
since my visit to San Francisco.
I presume that Miss Cole is the logical person
to succeed you. I have great respect for her as a public health
nurse, and I believe that she is interested in the whole question
of nursing. I am wondering, however, how much time she will be
able to give to the general program, such as the organization of
committees, the enrolment of nurses, contacts with schools of nurs-
ing, requests for nurses for disaster relief, advice on Home Hygiene
& Care of the Sick, and assistance with disabled nurses, not to
mention the help we expect from a Division Director when nurses are
needed for various governmental services. For example - we must now
turn our attention to helping the Veterans Bureau secure two hundred
nurses, a notice of this will reach you later. If Miss Cole succeeds
you then it would seem necessary for her to have an assistant to look
after the public health nursing.
Will you not talk this whole question over with
Mr. Brannion and let me know how he feels about it all? I shall be
quite willing to see Miss Cole appointed, but I do not want the
service which is fundamental to the development of any specialized
form of nursing suffer. I of course sympathize with you and appreciate
your situation,
I trust that you will let mehear from you from
time to time, even though you may not be in the office, and I shall
lock forward to having you return to us at some other time. I am
hoping to get away for a couple of weeks vacation tonight so that I am
sending you a rather hurried letter.
Sincerely yours,
Director - Nursing Service.
