September 5, 1922. Miss Lillian Thite, Director, Nursing Service, Pacific Division, A.R.C., Civic Auditorium, Larkin Grove Ste., San Francisco, Calif. My dear Miss White: I am distressed to hear of your decision to resign from the Division Office. I prequme there is no other course to pursue, but to regard, Miss Cole as the Division Director of Nursing. I wish that she had a little broader experience as far as training schools, etc, are concerned, and I an wondering how such time she will be willing to give to the generál program of nursing as far as organization of committees, enrolment, contacts with schools of nursing, prepiration for disaster relief, advice on Home Hygiene and Care of the Sick, and assi tance with disabled nurses, as well as helping to securo nurses for the various governmental services? I have great respect for her as a public health nurse, and I believe that she is a very fair-minded person. The only thing is that her public health nursing program is so important and is 80 pressing in its nature that it would be exceedingly difficult for her to see the irportance of the other phases of nu sing, even with the best intention. Would it be possible to bring Miss Harrington in to the office, for I fear that unless someene is there to look after this side of the nursing question it will suffer very serioualy? May I ask you to ahow this letter to Mr. Brannion in order to let him ses how I feel in regard to the whole matter? Is it wiser to ask him whether he considers it better to: ask Mias Cole to accept the appointment as Director, or would it be wiser to ask her to accept it as Acting Director for a time? I am very sórry that you feel it necessary to resign, but I sympathize with you and appreciate your feeling in regard to the whole matter. I hope you will let me hear from you from time to time, even though you may not be in the office, and I shall always look forward to having you return to us at some other tire. I am hoping to get away for a couple of weeks vacation on Thursday night, so that I am answering your letter at the sariiest possible opportunity. Sincerely yours, not Director - Nursing Service.
