President, Alumna Association
Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing
New York, New York
Dear President:
The Alumnae Association of the Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing
will, I think, be particularly interested in the subject of this letter.
As of course you all know, Catherine L. Whyte, from your School, volun-
teered to serve with the American Red Cross-Harvárd Field Hospital for com-
municable diseases in England. You have probably followed the interesting
experiences the nurses in that group are having in Salisbury now. Perhaps
you do not know how valuable their work is. The British Ministry of Health
has been most complimentary in regard to it. As an example of its value,
if a single case of typhus fever should appear in England, it is this Unit
ahich would be sent by the Ministry of Health to take measures which there
is every reason to believe would control the terrible menace to the people
of England.
We are all very proud of the work of this group of Red Cross nurses.
We hear of it from many different groups of people and always with great
respect and admiration for the nurses. It has been decided both by
Harvard University and by the Red Cross that the work of the Unit should
continue and it is hoped many of the present group will decide to remain
with it. There could be no more important war work anywhere than this.
You will remember the tragedy or the torpedoing and shipwreck of the
S. 3, Maasden and S. S. Vigrid last June, and you will remember too, I
think, that five of these nurses and their housemother Mrs. Ruth
Breckinridge, lost their lives then their lifeboat went to pieces after
the wes torpedoed
Friends of Mrs. Breckinridge have wented to give a memorial to her
and have felt that the kind of memorial she would have liked best would be
a sum of nonoy to be placed with the American Red Cross which vould con-
stitute a loan fund for the returned nurses of the Red Cross-Harvard Unit.
