October 24, 1941. To the Families of Nurses on the Staff of the American Red Cross-Harvard Field Hospital Unit: I know that you are hearing directly from England, but I have thought that you might like to hear occasionally through the Red Cross. The last group of 21 nurses reached England September 3rd, and we now have at work in England a full nursing staff of 62 American Red Cross nurses. The staff of the Unit includes 20 other members - tech- nicians, librarian, chef, secretaries, dietitians, and seven doctors. It is interesting to find that the nurses of the Unit come from 47 different schools of nursing in 13 different states in addition to one school in Wales. We now have word that 19 of, the 22 buildings of the Unit are complete, and on September 22nd the first patient was admitted. While awaiting their regular assignments the nurses have been assigned to shelters and hospitals to assist the British nurses, which has given them a splendid opportunity to become acquainted with general conditions. I know you are already thinking of Christmas packages for England, and will be looking to the Red Cross for some information on the best procedure to follow. Packages should be sent through the regular parcel post, but to help you with this and inform you of any arrangements the Red. Cross has been able to make regarding duty, etc., we are sending you in a few days a more complete statement. You will find certain specifica- tions with which you must comply such as weight and content. Your local post office will be able to give you full information on these. In view of the limitation on shipping space, all of which is so badly needed for relief supplies, the Red Cross does not feel justified in requesting space from the Ministry of Shipping for personal packages to its own personnel as long as there is any provision for taking care of such packages through regular channels. With all best wishes, believe me Sincerely yours, Mary Beard Director, Nursing Service. 66731 82311
