Miss Catherine Lillion Whyte,
Studio Club, 210 E. 77th St.,
New York City
My dear Miss Vhyte:
From reports and articles you will know that approx-
lst to care for the large number of men now in the Army Camps
imately 4,000 Red Cross nurses will be needed between now and July for
training. The Red Cross Nursing Service is making every effort
to provide the Corps Areas with the names of nurses who are avail-
able for service.
In regard to the assignment of public health nurses
in the First Reserve, we are told that these workers are urgently
needed in their respective communities for work with the civilian
population; also that developments in plans for national pre-
paredness indicate the probability of a need for public health
nurses for emergencies. Therefore, it was decided not to send
the names and records of recently enrolled public health nurses
to the Army for assignment to hospital duty.
We do, however, wish to give you the opportunity to ac-
cept such an assignment if you desire to do so and provided you
can be released from your present position for the period of a
year.
A prompt response _to this question will be appreciated.
Unless we hear from you concerning this we shall classify you as
a member of the Reserve of Public Health Nurses for emergencies,
related to war and national defense.
Sincerely yours,
Mary Beard,
Director, Nursing Service
