here Dumbar Hill Indiana AState Nurses' Assoriation write are yourself CIRCLE TOWER suggestions PERSONAL INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA February 11, 1944. MB Miss Mary Beard, National Director, MirsBard say O.K now American Red Cross Nursing Service, American Red Cross, Washington, D. C. Dear Miss Beard: I am returning herewith the photograph of Elizabeth G. McCoy. Photographs are not published in our State bulletin. But, Miss Beard, no committee of nurses connected with this state could even consider publishing a photograph of a nurse in uniform and wearing earrings. Has the A.R.C. Nursing Service changed its policy re jewelry with Nurses' uniforms? I know emphasis has been placed on this point with the aides. The properly dressed institutional nurses do not wear jewelry other than wedding rings with their uniforms. And the textbooks for students continue to emphasize the importance of the uniform. This quotation is from the fifth edition of Aiken's "Ethics for Nurses" 1943, pages 80 - 81 - The Uniform. - "The uniform has been adopted as a necessary part of the nurse's equipment. It announces to the little world in which the wearer lives and works the character of her duties in the institution. It carries with it a certain quality that helps to dignify the wearer and demands a certain respect. Does a nurse stop to consider that the manner in which she wears the uniform is an index of character? However care- fully the school authorities may design a uniform, it can be worn so as to present a careless, untidy appearance. If there are pins where buttons were intended; if the nurse has so little sense of the fitness of things that she is found wearing rings or other unnecessary jewelry with a uniform dress that is designed for work; if her hair is untidy, her cap crooked, or perched in a fly-away fashion on her head, so that it attracts undue attention; if part of the uniform is always missing, may we not conclude that such a nurse is lacking in attention to details and apt to be as careless in her work as in her appearance? A well trained nurse with her sense of what is proper duly developed will not be found wearing rings on fingers or in ears, bracelets, hair adornments, or conspicuous foot gear, while on duty in hospital or home.' Similar statements can be found in Dietz, "Professional Adjustments, Jamieson and Sewall, "Adjustment Notebook for Student Nurses." These are current text books for students of nursing. C. That the A.R.C. Nursing service would be willing to depart from the accepted custom regarding uniforms seems incredible to me. Has it done so? Sincerely, HelenTeal Helen Teal, R.N. gb Executive Secretary
