January 27, 1942 SPECIAL DELIVERY Miss Jane Mary Wilson AIR MAIL 54 Riverside Drive New York New York My dear Miss Wilson: The American Red Cross has been asked to recruit nurses for two emergency hospitals in Hawaii and we have had word of your interest in service of this kind. I am enclosing general information on the assignment of nurses and the following forms which, if you are interested, should be filled out and returned as quickly as possible to this office: 1. Physical examination report. 2. Application form. The report of your physical examination will, of course, have a great deal to do with your acceptance for the assignment and we expect that you will have a thorough examination, as a foreign assignment would be unwise unless your physical condition is excellent. Please take the responsibility of impressing your physician with this fact. Select your own physician and inform him that the Red Cross is prepared to pay for your examination, not to exceed $5.00. His bill, if there is one, should be submitted to this office, in care of the Nursing Service. Note the required immunization. Tetanus toxoid is also required but can be arranged when we notify you that you have been definitely `accepted. Your teeth should be in good condition so that it will not be likely that you will need dental work. The assignment which we are offering you pending completion of satisfactory credentials is for general staff duty. We do not as yet have definite word of the date of the unit's leaving although it is possible that we may be asked to have the nurses ready next week. Even though it would be necessary for you to be making tentative arrangements for release, you should not give up your position until you have not only received a definite appointment from us, but have been notified of the date on which you should be ready for assignment. If on reading these instructions you are definitely interested in being considered for an assignment, will you please wire me to that effect. Sincerely yours, Virginia M. Bunbar VD:J Assistant Director, Nursing Service Encl - Form 1219 and 1193 47303 Canaral information
