EXTRACT FROM LETTER TO MISS BEARD FROM MISS MARGERY MacLACHLAN, MARCH 6, 1943:
"Miss Harvard has been in charge of the Medical Supply Depot
and has done a very fine piece of work but is very unhappy working with
Dr. Wallis and is asking for a transfer. She has asked to go to Hawaii
and will be transferred there. She is being replaced by a local married
nurse.'
WAIMEA:
"Miss Specht as head nurse and three others are in full charge
of the hospital and expanded emergency facilities. This is a plantation
hospital at which the physician in charge was decidedly prejudiced against
graduate nurses in the hospital. Miss Specht and her nurses have sold
themselves completely, the physician told me that for the first time since
going there he was able to practice medicine as he should because he had
adequate (in quality) nursing assistance. He is asking to be allowed to
add to Miss Specht's salary as Superintendent of Nurses of the Hospital.
These girls are very happy and Miss Specht thinks she would like to remain
in this position when the war is over."
WILCOX MEMORIAL HOSPITAL:
"This is a very unhappy situation. Nine O.C.D.
nurses were loaned to the hospital. They were having a daily average of
thirty patients and five nurses on the staff. Although the nurses much
prefer being busy, they were unhappy because of conditions within the
hospital. The director of the Nursing Service, is given responsibility,
but not authority and the nurses know it. The discipline and morale are
bad. Miss Wilde has been in a very difficult position. I talked very
frankly with Miss Wilcox and if we can get Dr. Wallis to send patients to
Huleia our nurses will go back and Wilcox can get itself straightened out
and its staff built up. I am going back before very long a time and I
expect to find a change."
"Miss Catlett was transferred from Sacred Hearts to replace
Mrs. O'Connor and put at Wilcox at her request. Miss Elizabeth Wright
injured her coccyx while performing the jiujitsu at a party on January 31st.
She has been hospitalized at Wilmox Memorial Hospital, as the doctors felt
that her injury was too severe to warrant her traveling to Honolulu.
Although she was hurt off duty it is quite possible that we may have to
bear the expenses of her medical care and hospitalization. She has been
quite a problem, she came for a good time."
KILAUEA:
The O.C.D. expansion has been built, a nurses' cottage has in
also
been built which is adequate for six nurses. The Medical Supply Depot
was bringing in furnishing and supplies while I was there. No nurses
has been assigned there yet. There were seven patients the day of my
visit. The physician there is another who prefers Oriental aides and
orderlies to nurses. I tried to explain to him that the reason he had
not had satisfaction from his nurses was that he never provided a nurse
supervisor, he couldn't see why his own supervision was not adequate.
Mrs. Joyce has been very anxious to go up with nurses and see if she
couldn't accomplish there what Miss Specht has accomplished at Waimea,
but Miss Wilde has rightfully not allowed her to do so. However,
I
have advised that when the equipment and supplies have been brought
in, that she send Mrs. Joyce and two nurses to work only in setting up the
supply depot and the expanded O.C.D. Unit. The two nurses will come from Wilcox
Memorial Hospital. Mr. Fern is arranging with the owner of the plantation regarding
