Miss Álice Fitzgerald,
c/o American Red Cross Chapter,
Manila, Philippine Iglands.
My dear Miss Fitzgerald:
Your letter written on board the Logan reached
me some weeks ago, as well as your postal from Hawaii. Due to my
absence from National Handouarters I have not been able to reply to
either.
Madame deBisping has returned to Washington,
stated that she saw you in San Francisco and said that you had very
uncomfortable quarters on the Logan. It is too bad, for the discomforts
of a sea voyage are frequently enough in themselves without the complica-
tion of uncomfortable quarters. Madama deBisting Beems to have had a
royal trip, and she is now at the University Club in Washington, and I
have seen her but once.
You will be interested to know that an effort
was made to secure the insurance for Miss Bullard, and I am sure surprised
to know, that she refused any assistance, so that we were obliged to dis-
continue our efforts in her behalf.
A letter from Sir Claude Hill on a matter per-
taining to our book on Home Hygisne and Care of the Sick gave me an oppor-
tunity to write to him on the subject of Miss Olmsted's report. I called
his attention to the inaccuracy of her statement regarding the name of
the Bureau, and also her omission in her report to any reference to our
Schools of Nursing, which I felt was very important insamuch as the
School is the foundation of public health work. You will be interested
in his reply, a copy of which I am enclosing, and believe me I shall not
let the matter drop.
Miss Hay went to the Geneva Conference, and I
believe Miss Olmsted leaned on her shoulder and told her how badly she
was being treated and how little support she Was being given by Dr. Sand,
and that all assistance was being taken away from her, etc. Miss Hay
had an interview with Ls. Hill and tried to impress hi with the fact
that Dr. Sand should not interfere with the detail management of the
Nursing Service, and that Miss Olmsted should have the proper assistance.
In the courselef conversation Miss Olasted evidently conveyed the impress-
ion to Miss Hay, that no changes in the plans or programs were made, and
that her title as Director of Nursing was not used until they were assured
that you were not returning. Miss May with her "min] generosity has
